This is the setup you do after Claude is installed. 👇

These two pastes customize Claude for work — full file access, helpful tools, and your team's house rules built in.

🛑 First time on this PC? You have to install Claude first.

The steps below won't work until Claude is actually installed and running. Installing turns on Ubuntu, creates your Claude account, and downloads Claude Code — about 30–40 minutes (mostly waiting), and you only ever do it once.

Already installed, and typing claude starts it? You're in the right place — do the two steps below in order.

Install a few helpful tools

Open the Ubuntu window and paste the line below, then press Enter. It'll ask for your Ubuntu password (nothing shows as you type — that's normal).

⌨️ Paste this into the UBUNTU TERMINAL
sudo apt update && sudo apt install -y git pandoc poppler-utils unzip
On a company computer this is often blocked (admin/sudo is turned off). If it says "not in the sudoers file," just skip this step — everything below still works. Ask IT to run it, or see the note in the email.

Set up Claude

Type claude and press Enter to start it. Then do the one-paste setup — a single block you paste into Claude as your first message. It asks whether you’re new to this or a developer, detects that you’re on Windows (inside Ubuntu), and sets everything up: shortcuts, tools, safety settings, and plugins. Approve each step as it goes — about 5 minutes.

That’s it! ✅ When the paste finishes, quit Claude and reopen it — the setup page tells you exactly how to start Claude from then on.

If something goes wrong

🔁 Ubuntu is frozen, stuck, or won't open
The #1 fix. Open normal PowerShell (not Ubuntu) and run: wsl --shutdown — this fully restarts Ubuntu. Wait 10 seconds, then open Ubuntu again. It starts fresh.
Password won't work / nothing appears
The password is invisible as you type — no dots, no stars. That's normal. Type it carefully and press Enter.
Step 1 says "not in the sudoers file"
Your PC has admin locked down. Skip Step 1 — everything else works. Ask IT to run that one line.
"claude: command not found"
Claude isn't installed yet — do the Setup Guide first.
